How Many People Are Employed In America Currently?

By Ronald White

There has been a significant shift in the world economy in the recent past. The recession continues to persist despite the confidence exuded by different governments that the job market is expanding. The number of people looking for a job continues to rise every day. The big question many people ask is how many people are employed in America today. In terms of absolute numbers, the people employed is estimated to be 125 million people.

Rumors have been on the air that your companies will be laying some people off. We, it is just rumors until you eventually get the letter. You are one of the victims. Are you going to be shocked by the development?

Then, no technology could be deployed by large companies to allow their employees to work remotely. The employees had to come physically to the office from where they would interact with their colleagues. Fast forward to today, everything has changed.

There is no doubt that the recession is responsible for the death of jobs in most economies. Today, many people, including young college graduates start their entrepreneurship journey; not as a response to the urge to live out their lifelong dream, but as the means to keep a roof over their heads.

There is a definition of unemployment, believe it or not. It is defined as a person who does not have a job and has been looking unsuccessfully for over four weeks. There is a less personal definition. It is expressed in percentages, and it is derived by dividing the number of job seekers by the number of workers in the job force. This percentage right now is 9.3%, the highest in over a decade.

There are consequences of unemployment beyond just the economic hardship. These include an associated higher crime rate. There are more homicides and suicides linked to the unemployed people. Child abuse and alcoholism escalate. The youths are even harder hit. They cannot gain on-the-job skills and training, so their future is negatively impacted. They are often seen as not being employable since they have never worked and have not been able to find a job.

The business starts as a desperate measure to earn money for rent and other bills. However, in the process, you realize that the business has a potential of becoming a well-paying employer. Job security is good, but what happens when the job is not there anymore? Well, self-employment is the answer.

The frustrations of being unemployed may cause added discord in the household. Even though unemployed parents have more time to spend with children, often frustration and stress make that time unproductive.

The firms and companies are also finding it easier. There is no need to struggle with huge employee costs associated with maintaining employees. By outsourcing most of the services to freelancers, the companies can avoid the costs that are associated with hiring in-house workers such as the HR costs, employee benefits and bonus schemes, the pension plans and insurance costs.
