There are two types of systems that are able to cut metal in use today, whether for milling or machining. It replaced the old method of cutting with flames, now in less use because the use of plasma can cut through very thick items as well as metals that flame cutting was not effective on. The plasma is produced by passing an electric arc through certain gases like ordinary air, argon, oxygen, hydrogen or nitrogen. The result is also scientifically known as the fourth state of matter, after gas, solid and liquid. This produces intensely high heat needed for creating this state, and it is one of the few known processes that can do so.

During the 1950s, the process was created to help out industries that were experimenting in creating better products and machines. The necessity for a system that could cut things that the older flame system could not. Some will wonder why lasers cannot be used, but the highest power capacity for lasers, unlike plasma, could only cut medium thick sheets.

The system that is able to generate high heat levels meant that there was risk for human workers, and so when CNC came in, it was very welcome. It enables people to automate the entire process, do better cuts and does the controls with needed precision. This process is faster now, because there are no longer high risks for accidents.

Rooms that have ideal environments for creating plasma are now used for the CNC process. This stabilizes things to a whole new level, where adjustments are automatic, and every phase is monitored. The entire thing will have all the ears, eyes and arms needed for completing entire work orders in less time than before.

This type of manufacturing technique has advanced machines into the space age. And it is an industrial standard that is constantly improved and innovated on. The first generation machines for this have all been replaced, and the CNC type is another new innovation that has improved the quality of products made.
