The Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Brainstorming Graphic Organizer

By Thomas Edwards

The development of technologies has benefited many sectors including learning. The more new teaching techniques are being innovated, the more the society benefits from qualified and knowledgeable people. This is affecting, even the growth economies. When learners apply professional skills in projects, productivity is increased which puts the world in a better economic state. Among other techniques, brainstorming graphic organizer has proved an extensive use and students are becoming more creative. However, this technique has some merits and demerits, which are discussed below.

A graphic organizer characterizes information in patterns and graphic systems, which enhances learning by stimulating the interest and retaining of a learner. A student finds it more interesting to read or illustrate simple learning materials rather than reading comprehensive and complicated articles. Information put in graphical are easy to grasp and categorize them.

When learners are responsible for generating information from graphics, they develop skills in identifying the relationship between theories besides broadening their knowledge. Moreover, exposure to graphics enables them to establish new ways of tackling tasks. Hence, this puts them in a better position to learn their mistakes and improvise better learning styles.

Seeing becomes more of understanding. Students understand information better when the data is compiled by graphical organizers. That is why most books have pictures and graphs so that users can relate the information provided, with the flow of charts or the drawings. If one follows the idea of the graphic, then they can remember them even after years of completion of studies.

Moreover, they nurture retention. When you have a clear picture of what you have learned in mind, then it becomes easy even to deliver the same message when the time comes. Although the brain can absorb both reading and visuals, graphics are easy to remember as most of them are systematically organized.

They improve the status of learners as they experience improvement day by day. You can never lack some students with learning disabilities in class. Most of them understand their notes better through relating them to the provided graphics. As such, it boosts their achievement enabling them to remain at the same level with their classmates. Furthermore, it upturns the general rank of the class.

Despite having a good impact on studies, these graphic organizers have some drawbacks. Of course, visualizing information on graphics is exciting, and it will be hard to write short notes when you have been carried by a nice chart that has all the information that you need. However, the challenge comes in when you need to do exam revision. Sometimes you will not remember everything on the webs, and you will need some notes to refer.

Another setback is in response to answers to the students. Most instructors assume that all students are smart in using graphics and when they pose answers they expect the students to get answers from their class members. This leaves out other students confused. But in the real sense, a good instructor ought to provide feedback on the graphics.
