Learn About Residential Electrical Wiring Services With Trusted Philadelphia PA Electrician

By Nelson Cozad

Can you do your own electrical wiring? Depends. Should you?

The best answer is usually now. It is actually illegal in many Pennsylvania townships to do electrical work on your own. Even when it isn't, DIY electrical installations and repairs can be more harmful than good - and it often winds up causing more costly issues and may even result in fire. More importantly, your insurer might not cover these damages.

So, even if there is an exception to the licensed electrician requirement for homeowners, you should probably not try anything other than the most basic work yourself. Of course, hiring a Philadelphia electrician costs - which means it is very important to find an electrician who keeps their prices reasonable and does not do unnecessary work.

Why call an electrician? The most obvious reason is to deal with switches and outlets that are working, but there can be other signs that your wiring is in need of repairs. Lights that dim and flicker, but not as the result of outdated tubes or bulbs, strange smells, sparks coming from the fuse panel and outlets that are hot are all indicators of serious issues. Circuit breakers that seem to trip constantly are indications as well.

If your electric bill spikes and your usage hasn't changed, this can be viewed as a warning sign as well given that it indicates an electrical issue or an aging appliance that needs to be swapped out.

It's also worth making sure that you have GFC protected outlets in your kitchen or bathroom - if not, then they need to be installed. Many building codes now require them, but houses slip through all the time.

Whatever the case, it is often too risky to try and fix it yourself. Instead, call a qualified electrician who can help you work out what the problem is and find the best - and easiest and cheapest - solution.
