URL Shortener Do's & Don'ts By Online Marketing Companies

By Rob Sutter

Are you looking to become a marketer on the Internet? If so, you should be aware of the various tools available to you. Among the tools in question are URL or link shorteners, which have become quite popular as of late. What you may not know about them, however, is that it's not as simple as plugging in links to make them effect. Here are a few do's and don'ts from online marketing companies that will, hopefully, help you get the most out of these tools as possible.

DO use a reliable source. You may not know this, but the likes of fishbat.com can tell you that there are many URL shortener programs out there. This doesn't mean that they're all reliable, however, as some may yield lackluster results. You wouldn't want one of your shortened URLs to become broken, seeing as how this can be an SEO disaster for online marketing companies. Reliable sources are what you must focus on.

DON'T forget to use extensions. If you think that you have to revisit the same site, over and over again, to shorten your URLs, you'd be mistaken. There exists a bevy of extensions that your web browser can use. What this means is that you won't have to constantly visit the same place for this purpose. All you have to do is plug the desired link into your extension and let it do the rest. To say that this saves time would be an understatement.

DO make note of tracking. Another reason why you should use a link shortener is that it can track your progress. You might have a shortened link you're confident about, but this doesn't necessarily mean that you have everything you need. This is why it's worth noting the tracking functionality that shortener tools have to offer. Not only will you be able to see how many times your links are clicked, but you can tailor your efforts around them to boot.

DON'T overlook the versatility of shortened URLs. If you haven't yet been convinced to use shortened URLs, you should know that they are versatile. What this means is that they can be used across different forms of content, some catching the attention of people more than others. Everything from tweets to YouTube videos can benefit from shortened URLs. They'll see more engagement, which is a goal that anyone in business today should strive for.
