What You Need To Know About Your Occupation Health And Safety

By Stephen Edwards

In one way or another, every single human being is at risk of being hurt in the course of their work. The source of hurt could be physical, biological, chemical or psychosocial. Occupation health and safety measures come in handy when handy when dealing with all these types of hurt at the work place.

Psychosocial hazards at the place of work turn out be more harmful than even direct physical injury because they may be difficult to be detected and corrected, resulting in long term hurt to individuals affected. The importance of treating everybody with respect cannot be overemphasized, regardless of what position in the organisation is. Some workmates and bosses get so lost in the glory of seniority that they forget those below them are human beings just like them.

Harassment meted on low ranking employees at work by their supervisors is very common. The former may not be in a position to complain for fear of being reprimanded, terminated or being demoted even further. On the other hand, some junior colleagues are very disrespectful to their seniors out of mere spite and are lack work ethic. They totally disregard supervision with the intention of frustrating their seniors.

It is not a surprise that some occupations forbid colleagues from engaging in love affairs because it can interfere with their productivity at work. Sexual advances or anything suggestive of sexual harassment is offensive and has dire consequences to the perpetrator. It should be made clear on what is allowed and what is right as well as what is uncomfortable with respect to the personal space of an individual.

Investing in a psychologist in your occupation is very crucial in keeping your staff sane and being able to deal with the challenges at work with a sober mind. Counselling sessions at the workplace should be purely confidential and should not be a way of victimizing employees. It is a good way of cementing work relationships in the long run.

Fields where manual work is striking feature in a job description are highly risky because one can easily get injured in the process. Some of these professions include the medical field, construction, hotel industry and the welding industry among others. Surgeons tend to handle very sharp instruments that can so easily cause injury if not handled carefully. The same thing can happen to chefs who also handle extremely sharp knives.

Employees need to be fully equipped on how to handle certain tools with care. It also helps when they get supervised on every single activity that could be risky to ensure that accidents are minimized or eliminated altogether. Accidents tend to happen more in the hands of less experienced employees. Workers should also be provided with protective gear such as helmets, brightly coloured jackets, gloves, goggles and so on depending on the type of work they are handling.

It is important to train workers on how to act when a calamity strikes. They should be taught about fire extinction, for instance, so as to be fully prepared in the event of one. It is even better when they get demonstrations and participate in hypothetical situations so that they know exactly what to do when faced with reality. With all these measures in place, occupational health and safety will be maintained.
