Clean the tongue and gums thoroughly in order to maintain good oral hygiene. Failure to clean them leaves your mouth with debris which harbors tooth decay microorganisms. Avoid hard bristled toothbrushes because they may damage the gums and tongue. Soft bristles will also fail to get to all corners. Choose brushes according to the recommendation of dentists and health experts.

Clean the toothbrush after use and store it appropriately. Ensure that it has the least amount of water possible by the time you are storing it. This prevents microorganisms from building up and acting on your teeth the next time you are brushing. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months because the bristles will have been rendered ineffective.
