When Hiring A PI Lexington KY Clients Must Not Expect Miracles

By Angela Wood

For many people the very term private detective brings to mind the image of a brave, dashing hero. Others may picture a cynical, poorly dressed and deceptively stupid person that nevertheless always gets his man. These, and other stereotypes come from the many films and TV series based upon the lives of private detectives. The reality is different. Private investigators have to work very hard, often under difficult circumstances. When hiring a PI Lexington KY residents demand answers and solutions.

The licensing requirements for private investigators differ wildly from one state to the next. In some instances, formal training is required and in many other cases, applicants simply have to show that their credit and criminal records are clear. Nowhere, however, does a license to practice automatically include a license to carry a side arm. Many professionals in this field had previous career in the law enforcement agencies.

In the television series and films private detectives lead glamorous and dangerous lives. The reality is that the bulk of the income earned by most detectives come from tracing people in order to deliver legal documents or to collect debt. Many detectives are also hired to trace the whereabouts of run away children and family members. This type of work can be time consuming and monotonous but it keeps the wolves from the door.

Victims of crime often feel that the police is simply not doing enough. The police has heavy case loads and have restricted resources. As a result, people sometimes hire private detectives because they have an urgent need to see justice done. This type of service can be very expensive, partly because the cost of investigating a criminal case can be very high.

Another source of income for private detectives is civil investigations. Individuals hire detectives to find missing loved ones or to monitor the movements and acts of another person, such as a spouse suspected of conducting and affair, for example. Corporations hire private detectives to discreetly investigate fraud cases, to monitor the lifestyle of an employee or even to report on the movements of a competitor. These cases can be costly and protracted.

Private detectives are increasingly hired to provide discreet personal protection to wealthy individuals and their families. Other than a bodyguard, the detective does not hover over his charges, but rather keep a covert watch from a distance. Many wealthy people do not want to attract undue attention by the presence of bodyguards. Over the long term, such protection services can be extremely costly.

Choosing a private detective should be undertaken with circumspect. It is important to hire someone with experience in handling similar cases. Clients should always insist upon valid references. Both parties should clearly understand and agree to their responsibilities and the cost thereof. In protracted cases, the detective should report to the client on a regular basis and the client should insist upon the right to end the contract at any time.

Being a private investigator can earn a very good income, but hard work and dedication is necessary. Formal training is not always required, but it most certainly provide a definite edge. It is also important to understand that a large part of the work is boring routine.
