Importance Of Mobile Crane Inspections

By Tanisha Berg

Cranes are essential in most industrial applications today. Coupled with modern technology in their manufacturing and operations, moving heavy materials around the work place has never been easier. For many reasons, crane owners have recognized the need to make use of mobile crane inspections. While at times they do so in order to meet legal demands, companies may also seek these services to improve efficiency and output.

Governments have been forced to set regulations in this field in the best interest of citizens and investors alike. Among the existing laws, one states that all cranes must be inspected regularly. The process, which requires highly trained person, should be done regularly at intervals of three months to two years depending on the type of machine and the environment where it is used.

Failure to comply can result in a firm being sued. Despite their prevalence, a large information gap exists in the field of cranes relating to their purchase or maintenance. Companies for example face challenges when planning to buy these machines or their spare parts. This may lead in either delay in decision-making or make them end up buying parts or machines that do not suit the job.

A good example is when a company intends to buy cranes but wonders whether one, which uses radio signals, is better than one based on cable transmissions. A certified technician, taking into account the environment, nature of work, and the existing policies, can objectively present advantages and limitations of both systems. This might help in speeding up decision-making.

Equipments that are well maintained tend to last longer than those that are mishandled. Gears need to be greased or oiled regularly and in the right way. This will help in reducing the rates of replacement and therefore save on time and costs. The wiring system should also be checked once in a while for any faults. Certain factors in cranes such as current overload may cause malfunctions, and therefore, the machines should be well monitored.

When the greasing and oiling is done incorrectly or less regularly, the parts tend to wear off more rapidly. Electricity supply should also be regulated to prevent overload, which may weaken the system. Small malfunction issues can be handled by the operating staff. However, in case of any problem beyond their skills, such work should be directed to the correct person.

Leaving your machines in the right hands whenever it needs attention also aids in reducing future repair costs. Repairs that merely aim at concealing the problem can be compared to treating the symptoms of a disease, both of which do not help. Instead of going for quacks, choose trained inspection personnel who have years of experience in handling these machines. They are likely to do a better and more satisfying job.

Some jurisdictions may also insist that you carry out safety meetings and checkups before beginning daily operations. All companies should therefore strive to get the services of these experts. They not only reduce operation costs but also promote safety and efficiency at the workplace. The importance of inspection cannot be overemphasized. Besides, their costs are not that high.
