How To Make Compliance Webinars Interesting

By Carolyn Ellis

When one thinks about compliance training, terms like 'exciting' and 'fun' won't likely be the first things that come to mind. Although its importance in helping uphold objectives and standards cannot be understated, the classes tend to involve lengthy modules and assignments. But it doesn't have to be this way; you can easily inject some fun and color into your compliance webinars with just a few ideas.

Before creating your training development strategy, take some time to research your audience in order to get an insight on who they are. What is their level of knowledge and expertise? What do they consider fun and entertaining? Such questions can be answered by observing a few individuals as they work as well as using interviews and surveys.

Using characters in your courses gives you the opportunity to enhance comprehension and retention of the material. Such elements could take up various roles, from facilitators to narrators. Still, you need to develop each character in such a manner that the audience relates well to it as opposed to providing an irritating distraction.

As far as learning goes, most people would appreciate a good challenge, especially if there are rewards waiting in the end. You can take advantage of this by incorporating a few real-world scenarios that are both exciting and still educational into your training courses. Because the audience develops an emotional connection with the situation being discussed, the learning process becomes exciting and more meaningful for them.

If your courses are too 'serious' and rigid, the audience may find them somewhat intimidating. Perhaps the best way to eliminate the tension is to inject the right dosage of humor. This could be in the form of simple, witty comments or even detailed illustrations with tons of funny elements. The key here is to use just the right amount of humor to lighten the mood without sounding offensive.

Generally, the most challenging element of online training according to employees is the abundant content they need to absorb. Typically, the syllabus is comprised of lengthy modules and numerous assignments. This creates a huge burden that only goes to make the experience less pleasant for participants. You should thus break the content up into concise modules that are more digestible. Most people wouldn't object to 30-minute modules because they can be taken on-the-go or whenever it's convenient for the individual.

Videos can be used to supplement or even substitute conventional presentation as a way of making the subject matter more engaging and fun. With them, you can use an entertaining storyline featuring animations, live actors and slides to wholly bring the audience into the learning process, all with minimal hindrances. And if the said elements aren't compatible with your content, you could just fetch a few videos from the web and embed them into the course.

Even the most mundane subject matter could be transformed into an exciting and educational experience with a few tips. Instead of viewing it as another arduous chore, the participants will see it as a good opportunity to have fun. This in turn means they're likely to grasp your content and retain it in their minds for longer.
