Plastic Thermoforming: 3 Popular Packaging Options

By Lenna Stockwell

Plastic thermoforming is one of the most affordable packaging solutions available and is a suitable option for just about every industry. There is such a wide range of plastics available, that it is not difficult to find a suitable material for any product, including food and beverages.

The process of plastic thermoforming is quite interesting. Large, thin sheets of plastic are fed into large machines known as thermoformers. These machines will heat the plastic to a specific temperature, create the packaging using custom molds, cool the plastic and then trim off the excess plastic. This excess plastic, or web, can then be recycled and reused for other projects.

One of the most frequently created packaging types is called a blister pack or blister packaging. Other common varieties of plastic thermoform packaging include clamshell packages as well as a variety of thermoform trays. However, plastic thermoforming is not all about packaging. You also can create parts out of thermoform plastic as well as complete products. For instance, plastic cutlery and plastic cups are two common items created by thermoforming companies.

We see blister packaging all the time. The blister pack typically includes several cavities and then has a backing that helps keep the products inside the cavity safe and secure. Pharmaceuticals, whether over-the-counter or prescription medicines, often are stored in blister packaging. Many consumer retail products also will be stored in a blister package, such as a set of markers or pens. The thermoplastic portion of the package protects the product and allows for consumers to view what they are purchasing. Typically for retail products, paperboard is used as a backing for the thermoplastic and often this paperboard will include all the printed information about the product.

One special type of blister packaging is called a clamshell, and this is just a blister that folds over onto its other side. It is named because it opens on one end, much like clam's shell would open. These are very commonly seen in grocery stores. You can find them filled with everything from blueberries to cookies as well as many other types of fresh foods and baked goods. However, clamshells truly can hold just about anything, including many retail products. For these products, a plastic thermoforming company will seal up the clamshell, making it tamper resistant.

Finally, the thermoform tray is a very common type of packaging or package insert product by a plastic thermoforming company. The tray might include just one cavity or many cavities of varying size. You can use these trays to hold syringes and vials of medicine or perhaps to hold a frozen dinner with each food item in its own area. You also might see a toy with many different parts or pieces placed into a thermoform tray. These trays make it easier to keep your product safe and secure.
