Finding Straw Bales For Sale

Working the land is an age old tradition. Although it is not easy work it still provides a great sense of satisfaction. Many people leave the hustle and bustle of the city to enjoy a quieter life on the land. However, they must be prepared to look in many different directions to find markets for their products.

Anyone who has driven through the mid western states will remember seeing mile upon mile of grain fields. Once these grains have been harvested there are many thousands of straw bales for sale. Traditionally they have been used for animal bedding and fodder. However, in the past few years many new and innovative uses have been found for the humble bale.

Cows can eat and digest many different types of food. Because of their unique digestive system they are able to consume food stuffs that would be harmful or even fatal to other animals. For centuries cattle have made it through a harsh winter by eating straw. They typically prefer that softer stalks and milder flavor of oat stalks, but are typically willing to eat just about anything.

One of the other biggest uses for a typical bale of straw is for animal bedding. Many horse owners use the bales to provide a warm and comfortable bed for animals. It is easy to transport, store and work with. After use it will rot down and can be recycled yet again as compost. This creates a win win situation and really helps the environment.

Over the past few decades many family run farms have really been struggling to survive. The economy has been especially challenging and they really have seen the need to diversify and create new markets. Being part of the green movement is not only a huge help to the environment, but it also provides much needed jobs and money for farmers.

Local garden centers also provide a market for some bales. They are usually sold in the fall as Halloween decorations. People want their homes to look good and this is a fast and easy way to create a beautiful display. In addition a bale can also double as a handy place to sit and enjoy the nice fall weather. After they are no longer needed they can be added to a back yard compost heap, along with any old pumpkins and flowers.

Bales can be used in home construction. This simple method is literally thousands of years old. In ancient times people understood the insulating properties of straw and used it on a regular basis. This method is now part of the fast growing movement towards sustainable and environmentally responsible building practices. With some help and education many people are now building their own bale houses.

Straw bale homes are being increasingly common in all parts of the country. They keep homes in the desert south west cool in the summer heat. At the same time, a house built in the north will stay comfortably warm even in the worst of the cold and snow. It is important to use only top quality bales in home construction.
