By Claire Dowell

When an employer wants to make sure that he is hiring the best of the best or the most qualified employee, character is very important. Sometimes a criminal background check is necessary. This is where police or criminal records come in handy. A criminal record is a document that contains a person's hi list of criminal activities. In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts the access to criminal records is governed by the Criminal Offender Record Act. In this state, a criminal record is known as Criminal Offender Record.

Another important thing to take note about a criminal record is that it contains the history of crimes that a person is accused of. Regardless if a person was found not guilty, the accusations will appear on that person's criminal record. Although the scope of criminal records in Massachusetts is comprehensive, it has its limitations as well. Orders to prevent abuse also known as restraining orders are not included, but take note that if a person violates the restraining order, that violation will be written in the criminal record. Federal court cases and cases from other states are also excluded from the Criminal Offender Record or the Massachusetts Police Records.

Through these crucial documents, anyone who needs to review the background of anyone suspicious and delve into the in-depth details can do so. Knowing the character of a person before letting him or her into your life or your company is paramount. A criminal record is an extensive document that can include several crimes. These could include crimes against property and against moral turpitude. However comprehensive such noteworthy register might be, it does not document all crimes there are. A few exemptions, for example, are juvenile court records. These are documented on a separate category.

Another use of these records is for financial purposes. Lenders can check on people before deciding to approve a person's loan. When applying for a job or for a bank loan, it would be beneficial to be familiar with your own criminal record. If you have an idea of what an employer can scrutinize about you, you would have a better chance in presenting your best side and to be able to defend yourself during interviews. It also saves you the embarrassment of a criminal record coming up while you are already employed.

In Massachusetts, there are two ways of obtaining a person's criminal record. The conventional way involves mailing in a form to the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services: Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) unit. This involves the use of the traditional mailing system and requires you to print a form from the website and have it notarized. This costs a person $25 payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Payment must be through check or money order only. Cash and other mode of payments are not accepted. Another method, a more convenient one is to have it online. A person can obtain his criminal record online by logging in iCORI which is the official criminal record website for Massachusetts.

The online method offers several advantages, though. The turnaround time for the online request is faster compared to snail mail. It also saves an effort in terms of traveling and is economical since it requires a paperless transaction. Truly, technological innovations most especially the emergence of the Internet has taken records retrieval into a new level. With this modern methodology, fee public police records can already be accessed through various repositories online.
