By Iva Cannon

Working as a crane operator requires no formal education. You only have to learn about the job duties, training and certification to see if this is the right career for you. Accidents cost everyone all dearly when it comes to serious injuries, lost time, property damage and litigation. Safety is one of the most important issues you face and proficiency of machine operators is the key.

Certification as a crane operator is generally required by an employer for employment. Although some states do not yet require crane operators to be certified, but most employers require crane operator certification. This way, accidents, litigation and property damage cases can be reduced as one of the primary goals of every company. This is also a great way to lessen the result of injuries and fatalities on the job.

An independent, fair and objective assessment of skills and knowledge of crane operators are crucial in realizing the long term benefits and advantages of certification. Thus, it is important to involve expert representatives from various segments of the construction and the whole industry without any special interest of taking seniority.

To provide the right objective and independent assessment of proficiency of every operator, any certifying body will not offer training. But, the training itself is important to the process to enhance and improve their skill. These certifying bodies are also working with other training organizations that offer professional instruction in the field.

In order to be certified by the national association, operators must demonstrate knowledge and skills which subject matter experts have also judged necessary for safe crane operation. They usually do this through practical test on the equipment, written examination for a certain type of machine and a medical confirmation of physical ability to perform the job.

This is another way to ensure that workers who are carrying a certification have already shown their fundamental knowledge as an important aspect for safe operation of machines without depending in recommendation and subjective judgment. Operators who have earned their credential can also take certain satisfaction that they have the skills that has been recognized by the certifying authority.

Licensing itself is not an assurance that an operator possesses an important skill and knowledge to safely operate each equipment. Some programs do not require any testing or training. The program functions as a positive supplement to the latest licensing programs and recognized and accepted by others. Most of the written exams are performed on site when requested by the employers, unions, employer organization testing organizations and other groups.

Basically, examinations require at least 15 candidates. Most of the practical examinations are administered by the accredited practical examiners and requested at sites nationwide. There are actually no mandatory requirements for contractors to get certifications, but employers usually require the to have one, to ensure that they have the capacities to handle the job.

Machine contractors may work in manufacturing industries as well as on shipping and receiving ports and construction sites. The occupation is demanding and usually involves working outside, lifting heavy loads and exposed to manufacturing and construction elements such as chemicals. They typically work longer per day, but their shifts have uncommon frequency. Some would work in suitable weather or seasons, while others work overnight to avoid disturbing the public.
